## Why students choose it

- Regulator-verified standing: UGC deemed-to-be-university status since 13 January 2003, NAAC A++ at CGPA 3.70 in Cycle 3, NBA Tier I (Washington Accord) engineering accreditation across three campuses, and AACSB accreditation for Amrita School of Business, Coimbatore.
- Published, unusually specific international admission rules covering nationality, age, equivalency, deposit and named route exceptions, so an applicant can self-assess before applying.
- Merit scholarships carry numeric thresholds: a 100 per cent tuition waiver at 80 per cent and above, and a 50 per cent waiver between 70 and 79 per cent, for UG, PG and PhD programmes.

## Things to consider

- International admission is restricted to foreign nationals, defined as holders of a passport of a country other than India; NRIs and Indian citizens holding a foreign-board qualification are explicitly not treated as foreign nationals and apply through a separate NRI route.
- Full-time undergraduate applicants must be aged between 17 and 23, and no exemption from that band is published.
- Tuition is not published for the international route. The fee is stated only in the Provisional Offer Letter, must be paid annually in a single instalment in US dollars, and partial payments are refused.

## Best fit for

- Foreign-passport holders aged 17 to 23 who finished secondary school outside India and can obtain an AIU equivalency certificate for that certificate.
- Applicants who want an English-taught Indian engineering or computing degree and are comfortable with a compulsory residential, vegetarian-meal arrangements campus.
- Graduates seeking an Indian MBA with an additional US master's option, who can also satisfy the University at Buffalo's separate English-test and CGPA conditions.

## Campus and city

The Coimbatore headquarters campus began in 1994 as a School of Engineering in Ettimadai village, at the foothills of the Bouluvanpatty range of the Western Ghats. It now runs more than 120 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes for a student population above 12,000 with close to 1,500 faculty, organised into schools of Engineering, Computing, Business, Physical Sciences, Arts and Commerce, Agricultural Sciences, Architecture, Artificial Intelligence, Law and Social Sciences. Fixtures include the Anokha national techfest, an AICTE IDEA Lab and the Corporate and Industry Relations centre; the 30th convocation in 2026 conferred degrees on 2,197 graduates.

The headquarters campus is at Amritanagar, Ettimadai post, Coimbatore 641112, in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, set in the Western Ghats foothills rather than inside the city itself. Coimbatore is Tamil Nadu's third-largest city and a long-established textile, motor-pump and engineering-manufacturing centre with tens of thousands of small, medium and large industrial units. Coimbatore International Airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India, is the nearest arrival point for international students. Tamil is the state language, while teaching at Amrita is in English, so classes do not require Tamil even though local transport and markets largely run in it. Because Amrita requires undergraduate and postgraduate international students to live in university-allocated accommodation, most of a student's week is spent on the residential campus. Amrita also runs campuses at Amritapuri, Amaravati, Bengaluru, Chennai, Faridabad, Kochi, Mysuru, Nagercoil and Haridwar, and the campus a programme is attached to determines the city a student actually lives in.

Practical training is programme-attached rather than centralised. Engineering departments at Coimbatore keep their own laboratory stock: the Electrical and Electronics department, established in 1994, maintains Power Electronics, Electric Machines and Control Systems, Electrical Measurements and Embedded Systems laboratories plus an electrical workshop, and the Electronics and Communication curriculum carries specialisation electives in embedded systems, wireless and satellite communication, biomedical signal processing, VLSI fabrication technology, speech processing and optical communication. The Corporate and Industry Relations directorate at Coimbatore handles industry engagement and placement activity. The Bengaluru MBA-MS builds in a six-credit summer internship after the third trimester, a Live-in-Labs rural field-immersion block after the first two trimesters, and a study trip to the University at Buffalo at the end of the first year during which students take a Strategy course on the US campus. Amrita also operates dual-degree, twinning and student-exchange arrangements with partner universities in the United States and Europe through the Amrita Center for International Programs; standalone Live-in-Labs, internship and observership placements sit outside the degree-admission route and are applied for separately.

## Hostel, food and safety

Living in university-allocated accommodation is mandatory for undergraduate and postgraduate students; PhD students may live off campus and then arrange their own food. Coimbatore publishes 2026-27 rates: international hostels are air-conditioned rooms with attached washrooms at INR 1,00,000 for three-occupancy, INR 1,20,000 for two-occupancy and INR 1,50,000 for single occupancy, plus an INR 62,500 annual mess fee and a one-time INR 10,000 caution deposit. Non-AC rooms run INR 52,000 to INR 68,000 by block and occupancy, with the same mess fee. For international students the hostel charge is billed through the Provisional Offer Letter and bundles accommodation, mess and health insurance. Extra electrical appliances are not permitted in rooms.

The university mess serves vegetarian food only; there is no non-vegetarian option on the mess menu. Students with food allergies are required to declare them to their campus mess. Uniforms and books are paid for separately after arrival and are not part of the annual fee. Medical insurance is compulsory for every international student, is bundled into the hostel fee and covers inpatient services.

The campus is residential and gated, with a published dress code, an anti-ragging regime and mandatory on-campus residence for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students must notify the international office two days before leaving campus, and a Form C filing is required for each place stayed away from campus for more than 24 hours. Only a Student or Research visa endorsed to the institution is accepted for study.

The Amrita Center for International Programs handles e-FRRO filings (Form C within 24 hours of arrival, Form S within 14 days where the visa exceeds 180 days), bonafide letters, visa-extension paperwork and exit formalities, and files each international student's attendance and results on the e-FRRO portal every three months. It also assists with SIM-card and bank-account applications. Admission may be deferred by up to one year.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham a public or a private university?

It is private. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham appears on the University Grants Commission's consolidated list of institutions declared as Deemed to be Universities, with an entry for Ettimadai Post, Coimbatore and a declaration date of 13 January 2003. Deemed-to-be-university status is a degree-awarding recognition conferred by the Government of India; it is not the same as being a state or central university.

### Who is actually eligible to apply as an international student?

Only foreign nationals, which Amrita defines as a candidate holding the passport or citizenship of a country other than India, or holding an OCI or PIO card together with a passport of another country. A Non-Resident Indian, or an Indian citizen whose qualifying examination was taken with an international board or a foreign university, is explicitly not treated as a foreign national and must use the separate NRI, OCI and PIO admission route instead.

### Is there an age limit for undergraduate applicants?

Yes. Amrita's international admission policy states that full-time undergraduate applicants must be within the age group of 17 to 23 years. No exception to that band is published on the policy or FAQ pages, so an applicant outside it should confirm their position with the Amrita Center for International Programs before paying anything.

### Which programmes are excluded from the standard international route?

Amrita's international admission policy names six exceptions: Medicine, Ayurveda, Nursing, Live-in-Labs, Internship and Observership. Those follow different admission arrangements, and Nursing qualifications additionally need equivalency from the Indian Nursing Council. This page therefore covers only non-exception engineering, computing and management degrees.

### What is the AIU equivalency certificate and when is it needed?

The Association of Indian Universities issues equivalency certificates recognising a foreign qualification as equivalent to the corresponding Indian qualification. Amrita requires one for Grade 12 where Grade 12 was completed at a school, institution or board outside India, and for the undergraduate transcript where the bachelor's degree was awarded outside India. The student obtains it online themselves, and failure to submit it can also cost an awarded Amrita scholarship.

### How much does it cost, and why is no tuition figure published?

Amrita does not publish an international tuition figure. Its policy states that the fee structure for a programme is strictly the one issued in the Provisional Offer Letter and that no other fee structure applies. One concrete charge is published: a security deposit of USD 500 for all foreign students except Nepalese nationals, and INR 10,000 for Nepalese nationals. Coimbatore campus logistics and meal arrangements rates for 2026-27 are published separately in Indian rupees.

### How are fees paid?

All fees are transferred to bank details supplied by the international office. Payments are made in US dollars, with the exception of Nepalese students, who may pay in Indian rupees. The first year's fees must be remitted before the student reaches campus, subsequent annual fees are paid in a single instalment at times the university specifies, and partial payments are not accepted. A copy of the transfer must be sent to the international office.

### How does the application and selection process work?

Applications must be routed through the AOAP portal for international admissions; requests sent by email, WhatsApp or any other means are still channelled back through that portal. Selection uses a 70:30 weighting, with 70 per cent from marks and 30 per cent from an interview conducted by a panel of three or four subject faculty who score subject knowledge, communication skills and general awareness out of ten each.

### Is an entrance exam or English test required?

For B.Tech admission in 2026 Amrita's programme pages state that entry is based on the Amrita Entrance Examination - Engineering 2026 or a JEE Main 2026 percentile score; the NRI, PIO and foreign-national admission guidance adds that candidates who studied Plus Two outside India are exempt from that entrance examination, while those studying Plus Two in India must sit it. Amrita's international FAQ states GRE and TOEFL scores are mandatory for PhD programmes.

### When is the intake and when do applications close?

The academic year opens in July on the Coimbatore calendar. On the Amrita online admissions portal for international applicants, the last date for admission to all UG and PG programmes for Academic Year 2026 was 15 August 2026, and the portal now records the 2026 UG and PG cycle as closed. Applicants should treat the next cycle as the 2027 academic year and confirm dates on the portal.

### What scholarships exist for international students?

Amrita publishes two merit awards for international applicants: the Amrita Chancellor's Scholarship, a 100 per cent tuition waiver for 80 per cent and above, and the Amrita Meritorious Scholarship, a 50 per cent waiver for 70 to 79 per cent. Both apply to UG, PG and PhD programmes but not to Pharmacy, Nursing or Allied Health Sciences. They are tuition waivers only, renewable annually, and require a CGPA of at least 7.0 each semester and 75 per cent attendance.

### What accommodation is available and what does it cost?

Staying in university-allocated accommodation is compulsory for undergraduate and postgraduate students; PhD students may live outside and then arrange their own daily living. Coimbatore's published 2026-27 international-campus logistics rates are INR 1,00,000 for a three-occupancy air-conditioned room with attached washroom, INR 1,20,000 for two-occupancy and INR 1,50,000 for single occupancy, plus INR 62,500 meal arrangements and a one-time INR 10,000 caution deposit.

### Can an international student work in India while studying?

No. The Bureau of Immigration states that students on an Indian student visa must not undertake employment or business activity in India. Amrita's own guidance says work regulations vary by nationality, notes that students of Nepalese origin may work in India without a visa, and directs all other nationalities to Indian immigration regulations. No part-time work should be assumed as part of the funding plan.
