## Why students choose it

- Choose regular engineering, design, computing, business, science or arts study at the Padur campus.
- Compare English-medium programmes with separately recorded duration and academic requirements.
- Use programme-specific domestic and international eligibility rather than assuming one admission route fits every award.

## Things to consider

- The 2026–27 calendar records August 2026 first-year starts; later-cycle dates require a fresh joining notice.
- AICTE permits overseas categories for some programmes and records no permission for others, including BBA and BCA.
- Tuition, campus logistics and compulsory charges require a current programme- and category-specific quotation.

## Best fit for

- School-leavers seeking an English-medium regular undergraduate programme in Chennai.
- Graduates whose qualifying degree matches the exact entry routes for their selected postgraduate programme.
- Applicants ready to confirm foreign-qualification equivalence, sponsorship and programme-specific regulatory access.

## Campus and city

The Padur campus combines academic blocks, departmental laboratories, a library and sports facilities. Students have indoor recreation spaces, an open-air arena and campus cafés. The university traces its origin to Hindustan College of Engineering in 1985 and received deemed-to-be university status in 2008.

The main campus is on Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Old Mahabalipuram Road, Padur, via Kelambakkam, Chennai 603103. This HITS institution is distinct from the Hindusthan colleges in Coimbatore and similarly named Hindustan institutions in other states.

Engineering curricula combine lectures, laboratories and project work. Aeronautical facilities include aircraft hangars, an ALSIM flight simulator, a simulation laboratory, a fatigue and damage-tolerance laboratory and a supersonic wind tunnel. Programme requirements and access to particular facilities depend on the department.

## Hostel, food and safety

Separate boys’ and girls’ hostels offer shared AC and non-AC rooms, with attached or common bathrooms. The 2026–27 handbook names Jupiter and off-campus Orient for boys, and Kasturba, Bethany, Susan and Pluto for girls. Rooms are allocated subject to availability. Hostel fees are payable for the full academic year; request the current room, deposit and mess quotation before booking.

Campus dining options include Garage Café, Breeze Canteen, an Amul Ice Cream Parlour and Fresh Crush. Hostel dining follows fixed meal times, and private cooking in rooms is prohibited. A specific vegetarian, halal or allergy-safe meal commitment has not been established; confirm dietary needs before choosing a mess plan.

The campus clinic provides doctors on working days, a nurse around the clock, four observation beds and emergency ambulance access. Hostel teams include wardens, managers and security staff; leave and visitor permissions apply.

International Student Affairs coordinates overseas admission and student support. Hostel wardens and the Hostel Student Council handle residential issues and complaints. Students Traffic can help review programme fit, qualification documents and admission-category questions.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is HITS a deemed-to-be university?

UGC’s register lists Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science as a deemed-to-be university, with notification dated 5 May 2008. Its engineering-college origin dates to 1985.

### Where is the campus?

The regular programmes here are based at Padur on Old Mahabalipuram Road, via Kelambakkam, Chennai. Similarly named Hindusthan colleges in Coimbatore are different institutions.

### Which programmes are included?

The verified entries cover regular engineering, design, business, computer applications, science and arts degrees, plus selected postgraduate routes. An available department or broad directory listing alone does not establish every admission requirement.

### What is the teaching language?

The linked programme regulations specify English for instruction and assessment. Language courses follow their own subject language; current award pages confirm the programme duration.

### How long do regular degrees take?

B.Tech. and B.Des. programmes normally take four years. The listed arts, science, commerce, BBA and BCA degrees take three years; the listed regular postgraduate degrees take two years.

### What is required for domestic engineering entry?

The central eligibility table requires Physics and Mathematics plus an accepted third subject, 50% together or 45% for reserved categories, and at least 60% in Mathematics. HITSEEE and qualifying marks are used for selection; stated age and schooling conditions also apply.

### Do foreign nationals take HITSEEE?

Foreign nationals and NRIs are exempt from HITSEEE under the separate engineering admission route. Foreign-equivalent qualifications, required subjects, age and documentation are assessed separately; the domestic marks and age rules should not be transferred automatically.

### Are all programmes open to international applicants?

No. The 2026–27 AICTE approval has programme-specific foreign-national/OCI and NRI permissions. It records no such permission for Civil Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, B.Des. Fashion and Apparel Design, BBA and BCA; those entries cover domestic applicants.

### What is required for postgraduate entry?

Prerequisites differ by award. MCA has specified computing-degree or Mathematics-and-bridge routes; MBA requires a recognized bachelor’s degree and the applicable marks. Engineering master’s programmes have branch-specific qualifying-degree lists. Read the selected programme’s entry conditions.

### When do first-year classes start?

The 2026–27 calendar sets engineering and SPADE first-year classes for 24 August 2026, Management for 19 August, basic/applied sciences and liberal/creative arts for 17 August, and all first-year postgraduate programmes for 25 August. These dates describe that cohort.

### What are the tuition and campus logistics fees?

A current programme- and admission-category tuition quotation is required. campus logistics, transport and examination charges are separate; campus logistics fees cover the full academic year. Request the room, meal arrangements and deposit breakdown before budgeting.

### What accommodation and medical support are available?

Separate shared AC and non-AC campus logistics options are available, subject to room allocation. The campus clinic has working-day doctors, round-the-clock nursing, observation beds and an emergency ambulance. Confirm room and meal requirements before booking.
