## Campus and city

IMU operates Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai and Visakhapatnam campuses. Marine engineering and nautical programmes use residential study, while the listed management and technical master’s programmes are non-residential. Facilities and daily routines vary by teaching campus.

IMU headquarters and its Chennai teaching campus are on East Coast Road at Semmencherry, Chennai. The university also teaches at Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai Port, Navi Mumbai and Visakhapatnam. Check the campus on the allotment letter before planning accommodation or travel: a Chennai-headquartered university does not mean every course is taught in Chennai.

The university describes shipboard, workshop and simulator learning for marine engineering and nautical study. Naval architecture programmes focus on ship design and construction; the maritime logistics BBA has an apprenticeship component. Coursework, practical training, required sea service and professional competency certification are different stages. Admission or graduation does not guarantee a shipboard placement, licence or job.


## Hostel, food and safety

Marine engineering, nautical science, DNS and the listed undergraduate naval architecture routes are residential; PGDME is residential too. Non-residential programmes may obtain campus accommodation only subject to availability and university discretion; hostel allocation is not a right.

The prospectus separates residential and non-residential charges and refers to accommodation and messing costs. Ask the allocated campus for its current mess arrangements, dietary requirements and complete charges before accepting accommodation.

IMU states a zero-tolerance policy on ragging, following UGC regulations and Supreme Court guidelines. Campus authorities are the stated reporting contact. Seagoing entry also requires the prescribed DG Shipping medical assessment.

### Is Indian Maritime University a central university?

Yes. UGC lists IMU as a Central University established in 2008. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways publishes its establishing Act. DG Shipping separately lists five maritime training campuses as approved; that does not mean every award is a seagoing licence.

### Where will I study?

### Does every programme require IMU-CET?

No. Domestic seagoing undergraduate courses require IMU-CET and the current category percentile threshold. BBA uses Class 12 marks. MBA and M.Tech.have notified alternative entrance or merit routes; PGDME uses a separate Mumbai Port Campus process.

### What are the seagoing entry requirements?

The school-leaving route normally requires PCM60%and English 50%at Class 10 or 12, with exact programme-specific alternatives and relaxations. Age, unmarried status for the specified undergraduate courses and DG Shipping-approved medical certification apply. Read the exact programme entry conditions.

### Can overseas students apply?

The direct 2026-27 route lists two naval B.Tech.programmes at Visakhapatnam, BBA Logistics at Chennai, three specified M.Tech.routes and two MBA routes at Chennai. It uses separate academic, GRE/GMAT, age and equivalence conditions. DASA has separate rules; seagoing permission is not inferred.

### Which foreign tuition amount is confirmed?

Only the explicitly labelled 2026-27 non-residential SAARC/BIMSTEC/African-country tuition is quoted where the direct campus route is verified: INR175,000 annually for the listed MBA/M.Tech.or INR75,000 for Chennai BBA. This is a regional category quote, with other charges extra; it does not cover all international applicants.

### Why are some fees on request?

Costs depend on the programme, campus, admission route and nationality classification. Request a written quotation that separates tuition from programme and registration fees, deposits, campus logistics, meal arrangements and other compulsory costs. Compare the complete budget before accepting a place.

### Is campus logistics accommodation guaranteed?

### Does the DNS diploma complete a bachelor’s degree in one year?

No. The one-year Diploma in Nautical Science is a pre-sea stage leading towards B.Sc.Applied Nautical Science. Required subsequent training, sea service and examinations are separate; do not treat the diploma alone as a completed bachelor’s degree.

### Does completing the course guarantee employment or a licence?

No. University study, required professional training, sea service and competency certification are distinct. Admission, graduation or an apprenticeship component does not guarantee permanent employment, shipboard placement or a professional licence.
