## Why students choose it

- International applicants are admitted on qualifying-examination merit through the Directorate of International Relations, so no SRMJEEE entrance test applies to foreign, NRI, PIO and OCI candidates in the 2026 cycle
- Both international fee tables are published in full: the Foreign table for 2026 and the NRI, PIO and OCI table for 2025 with its scholarship column, so an applicant can compare the two routes before applying
- Eligibility is published subject by subject rather than as a single blanket rule, including the specific foreign boards SRMIST recognises and the exact +2 subject combinations each programme accepts

## Things to consider

- Employment is not permitted on an Indian student visa, so tuition, campus logistics and living costs have to be funded without any assumption of part-time earnings in India
- Tuition, registration and examination fees must be wired in US dollars within 10 days of the provisional admission letter, exclusive of bank charges; SRMIST states that cash and cheques are not accepted and that the provisional letter is not valid for visa purposes
- The admission category is fixed for the whole degree: SRMIST states that a student admitted under the NRI or NRI Sponsored category stays in that category even if both parents return to India permanently

## Best fit for

- Applicants holding GCE A Levels, an International Baccalaureate diploma, STPM, an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, South Australian Matriculation, Sri Lankan A Levels or an American High School Diploma, all of which SRMIST names as recognised +2 equivalents
- Students who want an English-taught Indian engineering or computing degree without sitting a national entrance test, and who can meet the Physics and Mathematics subject rule
- NRI, PIO and OCI families comparing the sponsored route against the foreign-national route, since both fee tables and the scholarship conditions are published side by side

## Campus and city

Kattankulathur is the founding campus, opened in 1985 as SRM Engineering College and now the headquarters of a deemed-to-be university that reports more than 60,000 full-time students across all its campuses. In the engineering data SRMIST submitted for India Rankings 2025 the faculty alone recorded 20,642 undergraduate, 586 postgraduate and 418 integrated-master's students, of whom 646, 25 and 5 respectively came from outside India, taught by 1,661 faculty members. The campus carries site-wide high-speed Wi-Fi, three banks and more than five ATMs, a food court and shops beyond the university canteen, separate gyms for men and women, and an on-site SRM Hotel used by visiting families.

Kattankulathur sits on the GST Road in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu, with the campus postal code 603203. SRMIST describes it as roughly a 45-minute drive from Chennai airport, reached from the city either by car or on the suburban electric train line that serves the campus. The surrounding corridor is one of the Chennai region's main industrial and IT belts, which is why several Kattankulathur programmes are run with named industry partners. The climate is tropical and matters for arrival planning: SRMIST describes moderate to heavy rain from October to December, a mild winter in January and February, a hot and humid summer from March to June that can reach about 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and warm weather with occasional rain from July to September. Because odd-semester classes start in July or August depending on faculty, most new international students arrive in the warm, showery part of the year rather than during the north-east monsoon.

Kattankulathur runs a Directorate of Career Centre from Tech Tower II that handles pre-placement talks, written tests, group discussions and interviews for all six faculties. The clearest verified outcome data is the engineering return SRMIST filed with the Ministry of Education for India Rankings 2025: of the 4,552 undergraduates who completed the four-year programme in the minimum stipulated time in 2023-24, 4,210 were placed and 212 went on to higher study, at a median salary of INR 620,000 per annum; at postgraduate level 278 of 297 completers were placed at a median of INR 612,000. The comparable 2022-23 undergraduate median was INR 610,000 and the 2021-22 median INR 449,000. Several Kattankulathur programmes are taught with a named partner rather than in the abstract: the B.Tech. Computer Science and Business Systems track runs in partnership with Tata Consultancy Services, M.Tech. Electric Vehicle Technology with Valeo, M.Tech. Information Security and Cyber Forensics with K7 Computing, the B.Tech. Automobile Engineering vehicles-testing stream with the Global Automotive Research Centre, and the MBA in Financial Services with the National Stock Exchange. The same India Rankings return records 106 sponsored research projects and 130 consultancy projects in 2023-24, and 821 full-time doctoral students.

## Hostel, food and safety

Two air-conditioned blocks with a combined capacity of about 400 are reserved for international students: the NRI Premium International Hostel on campus, and the Green Pearl International Hostel about ten minutes' walk away with shuttle buses to campus. Published 2026-27 rates include mess and cover the June-to-March academic year. For men, N Block is INR 273,000 a year for an air-conditioned two-share room and INR 253,000 for three-share, Green Pearl B Block is INR 197,500 non-air-conditioned three-share or USD 3,500 for the off-campus air-conditioned option, and Began Block is INR 133,000 for a non-attached two-share room. For women, Kopperundevi ranges from INR 165,000 to INR 270,000 and Meenakshi from INR 213,000 to INR 233,000. Laundry is optional at INR 7,500 to INR 8,500.

Hostel fees include mess catering, so food is bundled into the room rate rather than billed separately. The Green Pearl International Hostel runs a multi-cuisine dining facility serving Thai, Chinese and Indian food. On campus there is a food court and several shops beyond the university canteen. Fridges, washing machines, microwaves, room heaters, irons, air coolers and kettles are barred from every hostel, so in-room self-catering is not an option.

The campus houses the SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre with over 1,500 beds and the SRM Global Hospital, both open in an emergency, and SRMIST recommends taking out medical insurance. An anti-ragging committee, an equal opportunity cell and a grievance redressal mechanism are standing committees. A student may move into an allotted hostel room only once admission formalities, the student visa and immigration are complete.

The Office of International Relations works from the second floor of the Central Library Building, west wing. It handles Form C residential registration on campus for foreign nationals and OCI card holders, arranges Chennai airport transfers on prior request at the student's cost, issues visa letters, bonafide certificates and Aadhaar applications, and runs separate student-services and helpdesk mailboxes.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is SRM Institute of Science and Technology a public or a private university?

It is private. It began in 1985 as SRM Engineering College at Kattankulathur and was declared a deemed to be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956 with effect from 2 August 2002. The University Grants Commission's list of deemed to be universities carries it as entry 112 for Tamil Nadu, with Kattankulathur as the main campus and Ramapuram, Vadapalani and Modinagar as further campuses.

### Which campus does this page cover, and does it matter?

This page covers the Kattankulathur campus in Chengalpattu district only. It matters because SRMIST's own international fee tables mix campuses in one list, marking rows KTR for Kattankulathur, RMP for Ramapuram and VDP for Vadapalani, and because some programmes and accreditations exist at one campus and not another. The Council of Architecture approvals and the ABET listing quoted here are the Kattankulathur ones.

### What language are the programmes taught in?

English. SRMIST states that the medium of instruction for all its programmes is English, with no transition to a local language later in the degree. Additional languages are taught as subjects rather than as the medium: the engineering stream offers French, Japanese, German, Chinese, Korean or Spanish, and the Science and Humanities and Management streams offer Tamil, Hindi or French.

### Do international applicants have to sit SRMJEEE or another entrance exam?

For most programmes, no. SRMIST states that there is no entrance examination for foreign, NRI, PIO and OCI candidates, and that undergraduate admission is decided on the marks obtained in the qualifying 10+2 or equivalent examination on a first-come, first-served basis, provided the eligibility requirements are met. The exception is B.Arch., which requires a NATA pass or, per SRMIST, a JEE (Main) Paper 2 result.

### What does an undergraduate year actually cost, beyond the headline tuition?

Take a 2026 B.Tech. Computer Science and Engineering place at Kattankulathur as the worked example: USD 12,500 annual tuition, a one-time registration fee of USD 300, examination fees as announced each semester, and campus logistics with meal arrangements from about INR 133,000 to INR 273,000 a year depending on block and room type. Books, materials and transport are extra and are paid in Indian rupees. Cheaper programmes exist on the same campus, with most B.Tech. branches at USD 7,000 and the general B.Com. at USD 3,500.

### How do I apply, and what does it cost to apply?

Applications go to the SRMIST Directorate of International Relations through the international application form linked from the Admission International pages, not through the domestic admission portal. The application fee is USD 50 or INR 3,000, payable by credit card, debit card or net banking, and is non-refundable. SRMIST states that applications open in the first week of November each year.

### Is an English-language test such as IELTS or TOEFL required?

SRMIST does not publish an IELTS or TOEFL requirement on its international admission pages for the programmes covered here, and does not list one among the documents required at application or registration. Because a language-test rule can be added by an individual faculty, an applicant whose schooling was not in English should confirm the position with the Directorate of International Relations before paying the application fee.

### What is the difference between the Foreign and the NRI, PIO or OCI route?

They are separate admission categories with separate fee tables. The Foreign table publishes 2026 annual tuition with no scholarship column. The NRI, PIO and OCI table publishes the same annual figures for 2025 plus a scholarship column: a 40 per cent tuition waiver on engineering programmes and 50 per cent on others where the candidate meets the SAT score of 1000 out of 1600 or scores 70 per cent and above in the relevant higher-secondary subjects. SRMIST states no scholarship applies to the NRI Sponsored category, and that a candidate may apply in one category only.

### Who counts as a sponsor under the NRI Sponsored category?

SRMIST states that grandparents, parents and direct siblings of a candidate with NRI status are eligible to sponsor. It also states that a candidate who took the Grade 11 and Grade 12 examinations outside India must apply under the NRI category even if the school followed an Indian board, while a candidate who took those examinations inside India may choose either the domestic or the NRI-sponsored category, but not both.

### When do classes start and when does the application close?

The 2026 international deadline published for all courses is 30 August 2026, with PhD applications closing 30 April 2026 for the June intake and 30 October 2026 for the January intake. First-year start dates differ by faculty in 2026-27: engineering, architecture and design first-year classes begin on 17 August 2026 after orientation from 10 to 14 August, MBA first-year classes on 12 August 2026, and Science and Humanities first-year classes on 8 July 2026.

### What accreditation does the university hold, and what does it mean for a degree taken abroad?

SRMIST holds deemed-to-be-university status from the University Grants Commission and NAAC accreditation at the A++ grade with a CGPA of 3.58 in its fourth cycle, declared in June 2024. It also holds AICTE approval for its technical, management and computer-application programmes and Council of Architecture approval for B.Arch. and M.Arch. at Kattankulathur. Recognition of the resulting degree in another country is decided by that country's own credential-evaluation or licensing body, not by SRMIST, so the relevant authority in the destination country should be approached directly.

### What accommodation is available to international students and what does it cost?

Two air-conditioned blocks with a combined capacity of about 400 are set aside for international students: the NRI Premium International campus logistics on campus and the Green Pearl International campus logistics roughly ten minutes' walk away, with shuttle buses. Rooms are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis, and where international blocks are full SRMIST offers domestic campus logistics rooms subject to availability. Published 2026-27 rates run from INR 133,000 to INR 273,000 a year including meal arrangements, or USD 3,500 for the off-campus Green Pearl air-conditioned option.

### How does SRM Kattankulathur compare with other large private Indian universities on published outcomes?

The one comparison that rests on a common, government-collected dataset is the National Institutional Ranking Framework. In India Rankings 2025 the Ministry of Education placed S.R.M. Institute of Science and Technology 14th in the Engineering category with a score of 65.83 and 22nd in the Overall category with a score of 62.87. Rankings are a relative position rather than an accreditation, and they cover the institution as a whole rather than any individual programme on this page.
