## Why students choose it

- Specialist fisheries science, engineering and enterprise-management study across constituent campuses.
- Research farms and laboratory facilities support practical and postgraduate study.
- Distinct regular Indian, NRI and foreign-national routes for eligible fisheries awards.

## Things to consider

- Teaching campus and specialisation are linked; an award is not available at every constituent college.
- Domestic tuition excludes compulsory charges; foreign and NRI economic and development charges are additional.
- November 2026 postgraduate starts are tentative; future applicants need a newly announced cycle.

## Best fit for

- Applicants seeking regular fisheries-sector science, engineering or management study.
- Graduates ready for campus attendance and postgraduate practical or research work.
- School-leavers comparing the BFSc and Fisheries Engineering routes and their required subject combinations.

## Campus and city

The university operates constituent degree campuses in Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi, Ponneri, Thalainayeru and Chennai. The OMR postgraduate institute has biotechnology, genetics, nutrition, pharmacology, cell-culture and wet laboratories, alongside a brackishwater research farm. Choose the academic discipline and teaching campus together: not every specialisation is available at each location.

The headquarters is at Vettar River View Campus in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. Teaching also takes place at coastal and Chennai-region campuses, including OMR Vaniyanchavadi and Muttukadu. An allotment to the university does not imply study at headquarters; use the programme’s campus and admission order when arranging travel and accommodation.

Fisheries study connects laboratory work with freshwater, brackishwater and marine research facilities. Fisheries science master’s programmes include coursework and supervised research; engineering and biotechnology programmes have practical and project components. Farm, field and laboratory access depends on the teaching campus and discipline.

## Hostel, food and safety

University colleges provide hostel accommodation, subject to application and allotment. Thoothukudi has separate hostels for men and women, and Ponneri also has separate hostel facilities. The UG foreign/NRI guidelines allow selected students to apply to the college Dean after admission; hostel mess runs on a dividing-cost system. Confirm the assigned campus, current room charges, mess costs and deposits before travelling.

Hostel mess charges are separate from tuition. The UG foreign/NRI rules describe a dividing-cost mess system, so obtain the current campus-specific mess estimate. Do not treat an institutional economic fee or semester aggregate as a complete food and accommodation budget.

UG admissions require a medical-fitness certificate and health-insurance and vaccination details for foreign/NRI candidates. Follow the rules and arrival instructions of the allotted campus. Practical training may involve farms, laboratories or coastal facilities.

Constituent colleges provide libraries, computing and e-learning facilities, sports amenities and placement cells. Research supervision forms part of postgraduate study. Students Traffic can help check the applicant category, qualification route, campus and complete budget before an application.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is TNJFU a public university?

It is a Tamil Nadu state university established in 2012 at Nagapattinam. UGC lists it under its former name, Tamilnadu Fisheries University. It was renamed Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University in 2018.

### Where will I study?

The teaching campus depends on the degree and specialisation. Constituent campuses include Thoothukudi, Ponneri, Thalainayeru, Nagapattinam, OMR Vaniyanchavadi and Muttukadu. Use the programme’s campus details and final admission order.

### Are the regular degrees taught in English?

English is the university’s stated teaching language for its constituent colleges in the 2026-27 prospectus. The degree institutes are university-owned constituent units; standalone paraprofessional diplomas and affiliated private-college routes require separate checking.

### Can foreign students apply for BFSc or Fisheries Engineering?

The 2026-27 foreign-national category covers BFSc and BTech Fisheries Engineering for foreign passport holders not of Indian origin. It requires 12 years of equivalent schooling, the relevant subjects, qualifying grades, English evidence and an Indian Embassy eligibility certificate or NOC.

### Can foreign graduates apply for MFSc?

The foreign-national route requires a four-year BFSc or equivalent degree from a recognised university, foreign passport, Indian Embassy NOC and qualifying English-medium evidence. Equivalence is assessed by the university. The foreign quota is university-wide, not a separate guaranteed allocation in each discipline.

### What are the Indian MFSc entry requirements?

The regular Indian route requires a four-year BFSc from an eligible university and the stated OGPA or percentage threshold. Tamil Nadu applicants are considered under reservation first; applicants from other Indian states can be considered for unfilled seats. Entrance selection and original-record scrutiny apply.

### What does the regular tuition figure cover?

The displayed primary tuition uses the regular Indian category. It excludes examinations, laboratory and special charges, deposits, campus logistics and meal arrangements. Foreign-national and NRI economic, development and semester charges are distinct; request the complete category-specific invoice.

### Do foreign and NRI applicants pay the same as regular Indian applicants?

No. For MFSc, the foreign and NRI institutional economic fee is USD 3,000 in year one and USD 2,000 in year two, plus USD 1,000 development fee and regular INR semester charges. The undergraduate foreign/NRI schedule has a different four-year economic-fee structure.

### When do postgraduate classes start?

Registration and regular classes are tentatively scheduled for 23 November 2026. The revised 2026-27 application deadline is 30 October, with entrance on 12 November and counselling on 13 November at Ponneri. Follow the category-specific admission order for reporting.

### What is the undergraduate intake month?

The 2026-27 BFSc and Fisheries Engineering foreign/NRI guidelines state that the academic session ordinarily begins in September. This does not announce a future cycle, and the final reporting date is the one given in the allotment order.

### Are campus logistics and meals included in tuition?

No. campus logistics allotment and charges are separate, and meal arrangements is additional. The undergraduate guidelines describe a dividing-cost meal arrangements system. Apply to the allotted college for accommodation after admission and confirm the current full budget.

### Can final-year graduates apply for the MBA?

The current MBA route permits final-year bachelor’s students to apply, provided they produce their provisional degree certificate at counselling. A bachelor’s degree from a UGC-recognised university is the academic route; programme-specific selection and reservation rules still apply.
