## Admissions

Choose the degree, constituent campus and admission category before preparing the application. The university’s veterinary, technology and distance programmes follow different rules.

## Why students choose it

- A veterinary curriculum includes farm, laboratory and supervised clinical learning before the compulsory internship.
- Seven constituent veterinary colleges offer distinct campus choices through the university admission process.
- Current VCI recognition can be checked against the exact named college and applicable award-date conditions.

## Things to consider

- State-quota nativity, school-subject marks, age and attempt conditions differ from the VCI and overseas routes.
- The 5.5-year veterinary award includes a full year of internship after 4.5 years of coursework.
- Domestic tuition excludes other university charges, campus logistics and meal arrangements; NRI/foreign economic charges are additional.

## Best fit for

- Applicants ready for animal handling, supervised clinical practice and livestock-farm learning.
- School-leavers who satisfy the precise science subjects and admission-category conditions.
- Applicants willing to compare the actual college location instead of treating every seat as a Chennai campus.

## Campus and city

The veterinary colleges combine academic departments with laboratory, farm and clinical learning. The allotted college is the day-to-day study base, so compare its location and accommodation before ranking campus preferences.

Chennai houses the university headquarters at Madhavaram Milk Colony and Madras Veterinary College at Vepery near Chennai Central. Other veterinary colleges are at Namakkal, Tirunelveli, Orathanadu, Salem, Theni and Udumalpet. A TANUVAS admission therefore does not automatically mean living or studying in Chennai.

The BVSc curriculum includes laboratory work, Livestock Farm Complex training and clinical practice in small groups. Four and a half years of coursework are followed by a compulsory one-year internship. TANUVAS coordinates seven teaching veterinary hospitals; individual departments and rotations depend on the allotted college and academic schedule.

## Hostel, food and safety

The 2026–27 prospectus describes separate boys’ and girls’ hostels at constituent colleges. Madras Veterinary College has its own hostel arrangements; accommodation and mess costs belong to the allotted campus and are additional to tuition.

Boarding and lodging are separate from the published university tuition. Applicants with dietary requirements should discuss the actual campus mess arrangements during admission; a particular cuisine or meal plan is not guaranteed here.

The university publishes student grievance-redressal committees for its constituent colleges and an anti-ragging framework in the undergraduate regulations. Use the responsible campus committee and university channels for academic or student-welfare concerns.

TANUVAS publishes a Students Welfare Committee, constituent-college grievance contacts and a placement cell. Admission-category documentation and counselling are handled through the university process, while the allotted college manages day-to-day academic support.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is TANUVAS a public university?

TANUVAS is a public state university established in 1989, with headquarters at Madhavaram Milk Colony in Chennai. UGC lists the university; the veterinary colleges have their own VCI recognition entries and applicable qualification-date conditions.

### Are all veterinary seats in Chennai?

No. Madras Veterinary College is at Vepery in Chennai. Other constituent veterinary colleges are at Namakkal, Tirunelveli, Orathanadu, Salem, Theni and Udumalpet. The exact allotted campus determines the study location.

### How long is B.V.Sc. & A.H.?

The programme lasts 5.5 years:4.5 years of coursework followed by a one-year compulsory internship under the university’s veterinary curriculum. The internship is part of the degree pathway, rather than an optional add-on.

### Is the veterinary degree taught in English?

The university’s 2025–26 BVSc regulations expressly prescribe English as the medium of instruction. Clinical and farm contact can involve local animal owners, so local-language communication support is a practical consideration.

### What science subjects are needed?

The state academic route requires recognised 10+2 Biology, Physics and Chemistry, with Botany and Zoology accepted together instead of Biology. Each subject-group threshold and the combined aggregate vary by community category. The separate Tamil Nadu vocational quota has its own rules.

### Does the state route require NEET?

The university’s Tamil Nadu state-quota route ranks the specified qualifying-school subjects and uses counselling. The 15% VCI allocation is a separate national route under VCI rules; applicants must use the process for their actual category.

### Can NRI applicants choose any campus?

The 2026–27 BVSc table gives NRI seats only at Chennai, Namakkal, Tirunelveli and Orathanadu. NRI status, sponsor relationship, age, English-medium school study, science subjects, entrance selection and banking documents must satisfy that route.

### Can foreign nationals apply to every veterinary college?

The 2026–27 separate foreign-national quota names five seats at Madras Veterinary College in Chennai. It excludes applicants of Indian origin and OCI/PIO cardholders, and requires the prescribed passport, academic, age, English and Study in India conditions. That quota is not available at every campus.

### What does domestic tuition cover?

The 2026–27 tuition is INR 12,000 per 12-month professional year, INR 18,000 for the 18-month fourth year and INR 12,000 for internship, totalling INR 66,000 over 5.5 years. First-year university charges total INR 32,710; campus logistics, meal arrangements and stated small subscriptions or clinical charges are separate.

### Are NRI and foreign charges the same as domestic tuition?

No. The supported overseas categories add an institutional economic fee and one-time development charge to the usual university fees. The economic schedule starts at USD 7,000 in the first year, with later professional-year amounts and a USD 25,000 lump-sum option. These are not tuition-only figures.

### What is the verified first-year cohort month?

The own-university 2025–26 notice planned orientation and registration on 15 September 2025 and classes on 16 September 2025 for BVSc and the named BTech courses. September is a historical planned baseline; future applicants need their own cohort notice.

### Does every listed veterinary college have recognition?

The VCI-owned recognised-college list dated 22 October 2026 includes all seven constituent veterinary colleges. For Udumalpet, Theni and Salem, its footnotes recognise qualifications granted on or after 8 October 2026. Those college-specific conditions should remain attached to the relevant route.
