Eligibility and admission

The UK has no single country-wide admissions rule. Each university and course sets its own academic qualification, subject, language, test, portfolio and deadline requirements. Oxford uses course-specific selection and qualification guidance for international applicants.

An accepted qualification equivalent to the level and grade profile required by the chosen university and course
Course-specific subject prerequisites, admissions tests, interviews, written work or portfolio evidence where stated
English-language evidence at the level required by the institution and course
A valid passport and any academic documents, certified translations or verification requested by the institution
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and Student visa eligibility where immigration permission is required

Admission process

Compare the official course page, qualification requirements, language rules, fees and deadline before selecting a route. Prepare the required academic record, references, personal statement or research proposal and any test, portfolio or written-work evidence.

Which option may suit whom?

United Kingdom

An accepted qualification equivalent to the level and grade profile required by the chosen university and course
Student visa work rights depend on course level, sponsor and immigration conditions; check the current GOV.UK rules before accepting work.

United States

Undergraduate applicants normally submit a secondary-school credential and certified transcripts; institutions may also request national examination results, recommendations, essays and SAT or ACT scores.
F-1 students may have limited on-campus employment subject to status and school rules; Study in the States says students must consult the designated school official before working.

Universities to check

Students consider the UK for English-medium study, a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, intensive taught master's formats, established research routes and access to university careers and support services. Costs, course selectivity, fee status and post-study immigration conditions vary materially by institution and must be checked for the intended intake.

Undergraduate applicants normally submit a secondary-school credential and certified transcripts; institutions may also request national examination results, recommendations, essays and SAT or ACT scores.
Graduate and professional applicants normally need a recognised undergraduate degree or the programme's stated prerequisite qualification; departments may add tests, writing samples, portfolios, interviews, work experience or prerequisite courses.
English evidence may be required through TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or another institution-approved route. Exemptions and minimum scores vary by school and programme.
International students need a funding plan covering tuition, fees, living costs, health insurance and travel; the institution must be able to issue the immigration document only after its own requirements are met.
Regulated professional routes such as medicine, dentistry, law and teacher education have separate entry and licensing requirements; a related degree does not itself confer a U.S. professional licence.
