Eligibility and admission

There is no single national entry standard for U.S. higher education. Each institution and programme sets its own academic prerequisites, application platform, English-language evidence, tests, deadlines, portfolio or interview requirements, and financial-aid rules. EducationUSA advises applicants to check the international admissions office of every institution rather than relying on a country-wide cutoff.

• Undergraduate applicants normally submit a secondary-school credential and certified transcripts; institutions may also request national examination results, recommendations, essays and SAT or ACT scores.
• Graduate and professional applicants normally need a recognised undergraduate degree or the programme's stated prerequisite qualification; departments may add tests, writing samples, portfolios, interviews, work experience or prerequisite courses.
• English evidence may be required through TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or another institution-approved route. Exemptions and minimum scores vary by school and programme.
• International students need a funding plan covering tuition, fees, living costs, health insurance and travel; the institution must be able to issue the immigration document only after its own requirements are met.
• Regulated professional routes such as medicine, dentistry, law and teacher education have separate entry and licensing requirements; a related degree does not itself confer a U.S. professional licence.
