Training & support
Practical training & industry exposure
Heriot-Watt's optional Diploma in Industrial Training (DIT) is a widely used paid placement year available on many Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics/Actuarial Science programmes, typically taken between the second/third and final years, adding a year to the standard duration. Engineering degrees combine laboratory practicals with capstone design projects; Chemical Engineering is IChemE-accredited and Mechanical Engineering is IMechE-accredited, supporting progression toward Chartered Engineer status. Actuarial Science and related mathematics programmes carry Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) exemptions covering up to six core subjects for around 100-200 students a year. Brewing and Distilling students (a genuine taxonomy gap, not published in this catalogue) train on an on-site working brewery, distillery and rectification laboratory through the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD, est. 1989), a facility unique among UK universities.
