Frequently asked questions

MBBS at Azerbaijan Medical University — 9 questions answered

These are the most common questions Indian students and families ask before applying for MBBS at Azerbaijan Medical University, Baku. Covering admissions, fees, recognition, eligibility, hostel, career outcomes, and the India-return pathway — everything you need before making your decision.

Is the General Medicine programme direct-entry after high school?

Yes. The WHO World Directory of Medical Schools confirms admission follows completion of secondary education, with no prior university degree required.

What qualification is awarded on graduation?

Graduates receive the Physician qualification after six years of study in the General Medicine programme, accredited by IAAR (a WFME-recognized agency) through January 2027.

Is the programme genuinely taught in English?

Yes, for General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy specifically -- confirmed on AMU's own official admissions page. Public Health and Nursing are not offered in English.

What is the current tuition fee?

AMU's own official sources disagree: its live FAQ page states USD 6,000/year, while a separate official Dean's Office document shows USD 5,000/year. Confirm the current rate directly with AMU before committing, along with the USD 5,000/year preparatory-course fee.

Is there an entrance exam?

Yes. Applicants complete an online interview assessing Biology, Chemistry, Physics and the chosen language of instruction (USD 100 interview fee), followed by a preparatory/foundation course of roughly 5-6 months before formally entering Year 1.

What English-proficiency score is required?

IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 80 or higher for applicants to the English-medium track, per AMU's official documents-for-admission page.

When does the academic year start and when can I apply?

AMU does not publish a fixed application deadline for its own foundation-course intake, which is described as interview-based rather than date-driven. Azerbaijan's national academic calendar for 2026/27 lists a 15 September 2026 start, though this is a government-wide reference, not an AMU-specific confirmed date.

Is university accommodation available?

Yes, across six dormitories with capacity for up to 1,700 students, at a published annual fee of either USD 600 or USD 700 depending on which official AMU source is used -- confirm directly with the university.

Are scholarships available for international students?

AMU does not publish its own scholarship programme. Azerbaijan's national Heydar Aliyev International Education Grant covers medicine and residency programmes and may extend to Indian applicants as Non-Aligned Movement nationals, but this was not confirmed as including AMU specifically among its participating institutions.
