Frequently asked questions

MBBS at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences — 8 questions answered

These are the most common questions Indian students and families ask before applying for MBBS at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dar es Salaam. Covering admissions, fees, recognition, eligibility, hostel, career outcomes, and the India-return pathway — everything you need before making your decision.

Is the Doctor of Medicine programme direct-entry after high school?

Yes. Direct entry requires three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum of 6 points and at least a D grade in each subject at A-Level; no prior university degree is required.

What qualification is awarded on graduation?

Graduates receive the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree after five years (10 semesters) of study, followed by a mandatory one-year internship at an approved hospital before full registration.

What is the current tuition fee for international students?

USD 5,672 per year, published on both the university's live programme page and its official prospectus, plus modest application, registration and other administrative fees. The prospectus separately notes foreign fees are under review and subject to change, so this should be reconfirmed directly with the university.

How are foreign secondary-school qualifications evaluated?

Applicants with foreign certificates, such as Indian 12th-grade results, must first have them verified by Tanzania's National Examination Council (NECTA) before submitting an application through MUHAS's own online admissions portal.

Is there a separate entrance exam?

No standalone entrance exam is documented in current university sources for A-Level direct entry; admission is based on verified academic results. An older WHO Directory record mentioning an entrance exam appears to reflect outdated enrollment-era data.

When does the academic year start and when can I apply?

No MUHAS-specific international deadline was confirmed at the time of research. Tanzania's national university admissions calendar for the 2026/27 cycle runs its first application window from 10 July to 10 August 2026, though it is not confirmed whether this applies to foreign-certificate applicants; confirm directly with MUHAS.

Is university accommodation available?

No confirmed on-campus campus logistics fee for international, self-funded students was found in official university materials; some private off-campus housing operators near campus market specifically to international medical students.

Do Indian students need NEET to join this programme?

The university's own admissions criteria do not reference NEET. Separately, India's National Medical Commission requires Indian citizens who obtain a primary medical qualification abroad to have qualified NEET-UG and, on return, to clear the National Exit Test (NExT) before Indian licensure; this general framework was not independently verified against an NMC source for this specific programme.
