Pavlov First Saint Petersburg State Medical University (named after Nobel Laureate Ivan Pavlov, est. 1897) is one of Russia's most prestigious dedicated medical universities. It is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (FAIMER School ID F0001684) and its graduates are ECFMG-eligible. Indian Embassy data from 2015-2018 recorded only 47 graduates appearing for FMGE with 5 passing (10.64%) - a small cohort at that time suggesting early Indian enrollment. More recent data and the university's premium reputation suggest the cohort has grown substantially. Annual tuition is approximately $7,000-8,000, reflecting both the Pavlov brand and Saint Petersburg's cost structure. The city is Russia's second largest, with world-class cultural infrastructure - the Hermitage, Mariinsky Theatre, White Nights - and significantly better international transport links than regional Russian cities.
Saint Petersburg is genuinely different from other Russian university cities - it was built as Russia's European capital and retains a distinct European architectural identity. Pavlov University, founded in 1897 and named after the Nobel Prize-winning physiologist Ivan Pavlov, sits in the Petrogradsky District close to its own university clinic. The university's affiliation with dozens of clinical hospitals in Russia's medical second city gives students access to complex pathology cases. A dedicated Simulation and Training Centre supports pre-clinical skills practice before students rotate into hospital wards. The Indian student community in Saint Petersburg is growing, with Indian mess services and grocery options available, though less developed than in Kazan or Orenburg.

Hostels are located in the Petrogradsky District, within reach of the main teaching buildings and clinical bases. Rooms are typically shared by 2-3 students, with study rooms, common kitchens, and 24/7 security. Proximity to the medical clinics is a practical advantage for students on clinical rotation. Hostel and living costs in Saint Petersburg run higher than regional Russian cities - students should budget $500-700/month combined for hostel and living expenses, reflecting the city's status as Russia's second most expensive after Moscow.
St. Petersburg has the most diverse food scene of any Russian university city after Moscow. Indian restaurants such as Tandoor and Namaste operate in the city and are accessible to students by metro. Large supermarkets carry a wide range of international products, and the growing Indian student population supports informal mess arrangements within hostels for students who prefer self-cooking. Monthly food budgets for Indian students typically run higher than in regional cities, in line with Saint Petersburg's overall cost premium.
St. Petersburg is a safe, tourism-heavy city with a heavy police and CCTV presence in the central districts where the university operates. The university campus and hostels are in a prestigious district with 24/7 security. As with any major city, standard precautions apply - securing belongings on public transport and avoiding poorly lit areas late at night. The university's international office assists students with police registration and other visa-related safety compliance on arrival. Pavlov University's international office provides global orientation and assistance with internships in Europe and the USA for research-oriented students. There is a dedicated office for international academic exchange and high-level medical research collaboration. Students should independently confirm current FMGE/NExT preparation support and Indian-student-association activity directly with the university's international admissions office, since this is less documented in public sources than at RUDN or Pirogov.

Other universities in Russia
If you are planning MBBS admission in Russia, the real decision is not whether admission is possible. It is whether you are choosing the right university, preparing the right documents, and entering on a pathway that still makes sense for India-return goals later.
If you are comparing Russia seriously, the duration question is really about structure, internship, and planning. The useful answer is not a brochure number. It is understanding how the six-year pathway works and what that means for your long-term medical journey.
If your first question is cost, Russia belongs on the shortlist. But the smartest budget decision is not the cheapest seat on paper. It is the cheapest Russia option that still makes sense for the student's full six-year journey.
