The American University of Malta (AUM) is a private, English-medium university in Cospicua (Bormla), Malta, established in 2016 by Sadeen Education Investment Ltd and licensed by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA, formerly NCFHE) at Bachelor's, Master's and Doctorate level. AUM occupies the restored 19th-century Sadeen Building at Dock 1, offering American-style programmes in Business, Engineering, Computing and Design to a multinational student body.
AUM's main campus is the Sadeen Building (formerly the British Building), a restored 1841-1844 dockyard workshop at Dock 1 in Cospicua, one of Malta's historic Three Cities, sitting inside a UNESCO World Heritage buffer zone. The renovation combined conservation of the original stone structure with a contemporary glass-and-steel extension and won the Golden A' Design Award in February 2020. The building houses lecture halls, laboratories, administrative offices and the university Library, which also hosts the student Writing Centre. AUM describes its student body as drawn from over 40 nationalities. The university held its 6th Commencement Ceremony on 25 June 2026 at Dock 1, with Malta's Minister for Education and Sport delivering the address and the Board of Trustees' chairman, HRH Prince Jean de Nassau of Luxembourg, in attendance -- evidence of continued annual intake and graduating cohorts since the first class graduated in 2021. A second historic building, the Knights' Building (commissioned 1689), was originally planned as a further campus extension, but the Planning Authority formally refused the proposed extension on 21 November 2019 following sustained objections from Cottonera-area residents, the Nationalist Party and heritage groups over the loss of public open space and views of the Senglea fortifications; AUM's current teaching footprint remains centred on the Sadeen Building.

AUM's own Student Housing programme (managed through its Housing Office, +356 2778 5210) offers three shared-apartment room types near campus, priced per student per month excluding utility bills: a Double Bedroom (shared with one other student) at EUR 378.00, a Triple Bedroom (shared with two other students) at EUR 315.00, and a Private Room within a shared apartment at EUR 525.00. Listed amenities include free Wi-Fi, fully furnished rooms, shared kitchen facilities, laundry facilities, study areas, proximity to campus, 24/7 security and optional cleaning services; rooms are allocated first-come, first-served, and AUM asks students to contact Housing at least 30 days before the semester begins for specific requirements. As an independent benchmark, Numbeo's 2026 data for nearby Valletta show basic monthly utilities for an 85 sqm apartment averaging about EUR 138.75, and a private one-bedroom apartment in the city centre averaging about EUR 1,190/month if a student chooses off-campus private housing instead.
Daily living support
AUM's public pages do not list dedicated Indian, South Asian or halal food partnerships near campus. As an independent benchmark, Numbeo's 2026 data for nearby Valletta show a meal at an inexpensive restaurant averaging about EUR 20.00 and a fast-food combo meal at about EUR 12.00, with a weekly grocery basket (milk, bread, rice, chicken, vegetables) priced at typical Southern European supermarket rates. Cospicua and the neighbouring Three Cities and Valletta have a developed restaurant and grocery scene reflecting Maltese, Italian and broader Mediterranean cuisine; students with specific dietary needs (halal, vegetarian, Indian) should independently research current options near campus, since AUM does not publish dedicated guidance on this topic.
Safety and support
Numbeo's 2026 data for Valletta (the nearest indexed city to Cospicua, a few kilometres across the Grand Harbour) put the Crime Index at a "Low" 36.24 against a Safety Index of 63.76; daytime walking safety is rated "Very High" (81.5) and night-time walking safety "High" (66.97), with "corruption and bribery" the single highest-perceived-problem category (70.24, "High"). AUM's Student Affairs Office (+356 2778 5210, studentaffairs@aum.edu.mt) is the named point of contact for student welfare matters including visa/TRP support, and the university runs a free, confidential Student Counselling Service from a dedicated room on campus, alongside periodic mental-health and well-being workshops. AUM's own site does not publish a distinct campus-security or emergency-contact page beyond the Student Affairs Office; Malta's national emergency number is 112. International students work with AUM's Admissions Office (admissions@aum.edu.mt) before enrolling and its Student Affairs Office (+356 2778 5210, studentaffairs@aum.edu.mt) after arrival, including assistance with the Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) application required of all non-EU students. Named support services include the Career Centre (semester career fairs and employer networking events), the Writing Centre (one-on-one academic-writing tutoring based in the AUM Library, with remote sessions via Microsoft Teams), the Student Counselling Service (free, confidential sessions in a dedicated room, plus mental-health and well-being workshops through the academic year), and a Student Development Program. Applicants who do not yet meet the English-proficiency bar for direct admission can join AUM's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pathway programme (EUR 1,600, inclusive of materials, testing and student services) before starting their degree.
