The University of Aberdeen is a public university in Aberdeen, Scotland, founded in 1495, Scotland's third oldest and the UK's fifth oldest university. It formed in its current shape in 1860 when King's College merged with Marischal College (1593). Home to over 130 nationalities among roughly 15,000 students, Aberdeen teaches Law, Engineering, Business, Geosciences and Medicine, with strength in Petroleum and Energy Engineering given the city's role as Europe's energy capital.
The historic Old Aberdeen campus, ranked one of the UK's Top 10 Most Beautiful Historic campuses, centres on 15th-century King's College and its chapel, alongside the Sir Duncan Rice Library, named one of the world's most beautiful libraries (CEOWORLD, 2016). The Foresterhill campus hosts Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition alongside NHS Grampian's hospital site. Aberdeen Sports Village offers Olympic-standard, Commonwealth Games-legacy athletics and aquatics facilities shared with the city.

University-managed halls for 2026/27 range from about £111/week (single room, shared bathroom) to £191/week (ensuite) on standard 40-50 week contracts, with options including Hillhead, Crombie, Kings Hall and other halls scattered near the Old Aberdeen and King's campuses. Prices vary by hall, room type and bathroom arrangement, and postgraduate-specific and long-let options differ from standard undergraduate contracts, so applicants should check the live 'Accommodation Costs' page before budgeting.

Most university halls are self-catered with shared or private kitchens, so students plan their own grocery shopping and cooking. Aberdeen's city centre and Old Aberdeen retail areas offer supermarkets, halal and South Asian grocers, and a range of restaurants within walking or short bus distance of campus. No universal dietary guarantee is claimed here; students should confirm current on-campus catering options and nearby grocery choices directly after enrolment.

Aberdeen is consistently ranked among Scotland's safest cities and has held Purple Flag status for a safe night-time economy for 11 consecutive years. The Student Advice and Support Office and International Student Advisers, regulated by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner, provide dedicated support. Save current campus security contacts, use 999 for UK emergencies, and recheck local safety guidance after arrival. International Student Advisers in the Student Advice and Support Office give one-to-one Student visa and immigration guidance, the only staff permitted to provide such advice; the International Centre runs welcome events and trips. Eligible self-funded international students receive an automatic Aberdeen Global Scholarship (£6,000/year undergraduate, £8,000 postgraduate taught), plus registration, insurance and banking guidance on arrival.
