B.E./B.Tech Aerospace at Indian Institute of Technology Madras — 12 questions answered
These are the most common questions Indian students and families ask before applying for B.E./B.Tech Aerospace at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai. Covering admissions, fees, recognition, eligibility, hostel, career outcomes, and the India-return pathway — everything you need before making your decision.
Which undergraduate admission route applies?
Most residential BTech and named BS or direct dual degrees use JEE Advanced and JoSAA. BS Medical Sciences and Engineering and BS Chemistry instead use IAT with separate IIT Madras allocation. Bachelor of Cybersecurity uses the documented joint IIT Kanpur selection process. These routes cannot be substituted for each other.
Are current science degrees four-year BS or older BS/MS awards?
The 2026 joining schedule identifies four-year BS in Biological Science, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Medical Sciences and Engineering. Older central descriptions of BS/MS dual degrees should not be treated as another current admission offer. Any later upgrade or exit option has its own conditions.
What are the IAT-route qualification and nationality limits?
For 2026, applicants need IAT qualification and Class XII science in 2024, 2025 or 2026, with 60% aggregate or 55% for SC/ST/PwD. Medical Sciences and Engineering requires Mathematics plus two of Biology/Chemistry/Physics; Chemistry requires Chemistry plus two of Biology/Mathematics/Physics. Only Indian nationals or the specified pre 4 March 2021 OCI/PIO cardholders are eligible.
How does Bachelor of Cybersecurity differ from a BTech?
The dedicated four-year B.Cyber. has two years of IIT Madras coursework followed by two years of field deployment in selected government organisations. Its 2026 route is Indian-national only and uses JEE Main 2025/26 performance, prior cybersecurity work and the joint test/hackathon process. IIT Kanpur fees are not an IIT Madras fee quote.
What determines MTech eligibility?
The programme’s accepted qualifying subject and GATE paper must both match. Regular 2026 entry accepts the stated GATE 2024/25/26 scores; eligible IIT B.Tech. graduates with CGPA 8/10 orabove can use departmental review without GATE. HTTA/non-HTTA are funding categories, not different degree awards. Sponsored and international routes have separate requirements.
Do MA and MSc use the same entrance process?
No. Regular MA uses programme-specific GATEX Hpapers and accepts qualifying undergraduate disciplines. Regular MSc uses JAM and the exact subject-duration requirements for Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics. International admission assesses degree relevance and language/grade requirements separately; domestic subject conditions are not automatically the overseas route.
Which joining dates are verified?
The 2026 residential undergraduate cohort began classes 30 July 2026, and postgraduate classes began 27 July 2026. Future cohorts need their own joining notices. The non-campus BS portals currently name a January 2027 qualifier/admission term with 29 January 2027 applicationdeadline; that is not a promise of regular foundation classes on 1 January.
What tuition applies to Indian applicants?
For the 2026–27 entry schedule, semester tuition is INR 100,000 for UG, INR 25,000 for MTech/MSc, INR 20,000 for MA and INR 250,000 for MBA, before applicable remissions. Annual baselines multiply the semester tuition by two. Later revisions, one-time charges, deposits, campus logistics and meal arrangements costs are separate.
Are foreign-national fees the same?
No. The 2026 fee notice separates foreign categories. Standard foreign UG/MTech/MSc/MA tuition is INR 500,000 per semester; ICCR-funded postgraduate SAARC and non-SAARC categories are INR 75,000 and INR 150,000 respectively. Foreign MBA tuition is USD 10,000 per semester. Specific PIO/OCI/OPEN-category exceptions use Indian rates.
How do non-campus BS fees and attendance work?
Pay for registered courses/credits each term; no fixed annual residential fee is implied. Data Science, Electronic Systems, Aeronautics and Space Technology and Management and Data Science have their own academic stages, assessment and practical requirements. In-person exams, any required campus laboratory travel and overseas facilitation fees need separate planning.
Is accommodation included with every degree?
Residential students use campus logistics allocations subject to institute arrangements, with campus logistics and meal arrangements charges separate from tuition. Non-campus enrolment does not guarantee accommodation for laboratory visits or examinations. Joint programmes and Cybersecurity field deployments can involve other locations. Accompanying parents need their own accommodation.
Are fee remissions and assistantships guaranteed?
Indian tuition exemptions/remissions depend on the specified category and income documents. Eligible Indian MTech HTTA students may receive INR 12,400 per month for up to 22 months with required academic duties; non-HTTA has no such assistantship. International scholarships have separate nomination and award conditions. Admission alone does not guarantee funding.
