Indian Institute of Technology Madras: Hostel & Accommodation

First-year residential undergraduates normally share rooms; later single, double or triple allocations depend on the hostel. Postgraduates use shared or single rooms. Wardens, resident assistant wardens and hostel councils support administration. Hostel and advance mess charges are separate from tuition and require the current notice. Non-campus BS enrolment does not guarantee a hostel place for examinations or laboratory visits; accompanying parents must arrange their own stay.

Residential dining includes North Indian and South Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices, with institute dining facilities and campus eateries. Mess selection, meal costs and any special dietary requirement should be confirmed before joining. Online learners attending practical sessions need separate accommodation and meal arrangements.

The wooded Chennai campus brings together academic buildings, laboratories, hostels, sports and student clubs. Gajendra Circle connects the residential, academic and hostel zones. Campus activities include technical and cultural events, student organisations and innovation projects. Non-campus BS learners study through their separate online and examination arrangements rather than receiving a residential campus place.

Institute identity cards and regulated visitor passes form part of campus access requirements. The campus hospital provides general care, visiting specialists and ambulance facilities. Students should obtain the current emergency and reporting contacts when joining; these services do not establish a guaranteed response time. Faculty academic advice, hostel wardens and student administration support residential study. The Office of Global Engagement guides international admissions and arrival formalities, with separate insurance requirements. The campus hospital supports healthcare needs; non-campus learners use their programme’s registration and course-support channels.
