Lithuania is an EU and NATO member state in the Baltic region of Northern Europe, with a modern EU-integrated higher education system and one of the most cost-effective study environments in the European Union. For Indian nursing students, Lithuania — specifically Kaunas — offers a compelling combination: a fully EU-recognised nursing degree from a WHO Collaborating Centre (LSMU), tuition of EUR 4,300/year, and a direct pathway to nursing careers across all 27 EU member states. As a Schengen Area member, a Lithuanian residence permit allows travel across 26 European countries. Indian students can work up to 20 hours per week during studies. Kaunas is Lithuania's second-largest city and cultural capital, consistently ranked among the most affordable student cities in the EU, with monthly living costs of EUR 450–700.

Europe
Climate
Baltic — warm summers (18–26°C, up to 18 hours daylight in June), cold winters (-5 to -15°C, heavy snow from November through March). Spring and autumn are mild at 5–15°C with beautiful seasonal landscapes. Kaunas is located in central Lithuania at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers. The Baltic winter is the biggest climate adjustment for Indian students — proper thermal clothing, waterproof boots, gloves, and a quality winter jacket are essential from the first year.
Living cost
Kaunas is consistently ranked among the most affordable cities in the EU — significantly cheaper than Vilnius, and a fraction of the cost of Western European cities. Budget carefully from the first year, especially for winter clothing and the non-refundable admission fees.

Tuition fee and hostel estimate
Annual tuition for non-EU international students is EUR 4,400/year. Programme duration is 3.5 years (7 semesters, 210 ECTS): 3 full academic years + 1 final semester (6 months). Total tuition: EUR 4,400 × 3 + EUR 2,200 (half-year) = EUR 15,400. One-time application fee: EUR 50 (non-refundable). 40% Talent Scholarship available in Year 1 for students with 85%+ Class 12 average, B2 English certificate, and scholarship assignment — reduces Year 1 tuition to approximately EUR 2,640 (total with scholarship: EUR 13,640). USD conversion at EUR 1 = USD 1.08 (June 2026 ECB rate). Annual living cost estimate of EUR 6,600 used for USD conversion ($7,128 ≈ $7,100), based on mid-range Kaunas costs (EUR 550/month). No separate registration fee. Part-time work rights (20 hours/week, EUR 5.65/hour minimum) generate EUR 450–490/month during term — potential EUR 12,000–18,000 earnings over 3.5 years.
Clinical & support
Clinical exposure
SMK's General Practice Nursing programme requires 22 weeks (approximately 5.5 months) of supervised clinical training in real Lithuanian healthcare institutions — distributed across all 7 semesters rather than concentrated at the end. Clinical placement settings progress through the programme: primary healthcare (outpatient clinics, family medicine practices, community health centres); secondary hospitals (medical and surgical wards, emergency departments, specialist outpatients); tertiary care (oncology, neurology, intensive care, cardiology — depending on campus city and placement programme); nursing homes and long-term care (geriatric and palliative nursing); mental health institutions (psychiatric nursing, inpatient and community settings); rehabilitation centres (physical and occupational therapy, post-surgical); children's healthcare (paediatric wards, development centres, school health); and social service organisations (home nursing, community care). Before entering live clinical environments, SMK nursing students build procedural skills in simulation and anatomy labs — anatomical models, clinical scenario training, and procedural practice — so students enter hospital placements already prepared. The three-campus structure means students at different cities access different hospital systems and healthcare environments, providing geographic breadth to clinical experience.

Intake
September · February
When to start
Start document preparation and application planning at least 3–6 months before the September intake.
Admissions notes
Fall intake (September 1 start): application deadline July 1 for Indian students requiring visa. Spring intake (February 1 start): deadline December 1. SMK strongly advises visa-required applicants to apply significantly earlier — TRP processing can take up to 2 months. For Fall 2026, Indian students should ideally have their admission confirmed and TRP process started by April/May 2026. For the 40% Talent Scholarship: scholarship documents must be submitted by August 20 (Fall) or January 20 (Spring) — strict, non-negotiable deadlines.
SMK's 40% Talent Scholarship reduces Year 1 tuition from EUR 4,400 to approximately EUR 2,640 (saving EUR 1,760 ≈ INR 1.6 lakhs) for students meeting all criteria: Class 12 average of 85%+, B2 English certificate, completed scholarship assignment, and timely submission. A sibling/alumni discount of 10% is available for students with family ties to SMK. From Year 2, performance-based scholarships of up to 50% are available for the best and most active students. Part-time work rights (20 hours/week, EUR 5.65/hour minimum) generate EUR 450–490/month — the most reliable ongoing financial supplement. Education loans from Indian banks and NBFCs are available for accredited international institutions; SMK's Ministry of Education licensing and EQF Level 6 status support the loan file.
How we assess
We confirm whether any fee waiver is merit-based, automatic, limited-seat, renewal-dependent, or deferred to later years before presenting it as part of a cost plan.
What we obtain in writing
Written scholarship terms, net payable tuition after any waiver, and whether hostel or ancillary charges are excluded are confirmed before families make a financial decision.
A WDOMS-listed MBBS opens six career pathways. India return via FMGE/NExT is the most common, but the same degree qualifies you to sit licensing exams for the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand — or stay for PG in Lithuania.
Timeline: 6–9 months after graduation
Most common pathway for Indian students. After completing your MBBS and one-year internship abroad, you clear FMGE (being replaced by NExT) to obtain NMC registration. Students Traffic provides free FMGE/NExT coaching for students who join through us.

Accommodation
SMK does not operate dedicated university dormitories for nursing students — accommodation is the student's responsibility, with SMK providing guidance and assistance for those who need help. Shared room rental costs by city: Vilnius EUR 200–400/month per person; Kaunas EUR 150–300/month; Klaipeda EUR 130–250/month — all among the most affordable private rental markets in the EU. Most Indian students share 2–3 person apartments to keep costs down. SMK assists incoming international students with accommodation search guidance, neighbourhood recommendations, and contacts. Students Traffic provides city-specific accommodation guides and connects new SMK students with existing Indian students at their chosen campus before arrival.
Daily living support
The Indian food and grocery situation varies by campus city. Vilnius: the best Indian infrastructure in Lithuania — dedicated Indian restaurants, grocery stores stocking basmati rice, lentils, chickpeas, spices, and cooking essentials, with Hindu and Sikh communities present. Kaunas: Indian grocery basics (rice, lentils, spices) in major supermarkets and growing Asian stores; Vilnius is 1 hour by train for more variety and Indian restaurants. Klaipeda: Indian staples available in supermarkets; Kaunas reachable in 1.5–2 hours by bus, Vilnius accessible for larger shopping trips. Most Indian students at all three campuses cook at home in shared apartments — the most budget-friendly approach at EUR 120–200/month for groceries. Students Traffic connects all enrolled SMK students with the Indian student community at their chosen campus before arrival.
Safety and support
Lithuania is an EU and NATO member state with stable democratic governance and a very low violent crime rate — consistent with European safety standards. All three SMK campus cities are safe for international students. Vilnius is a modern, well-lit European capital with excellent public transport and a large international population. Kaunas is a university city with an established and active international student community. Klaipeda is a smaller, quiet Baltic port city. Indian students — including female students — at all three SMK campuses consistently report feeling safe and welcomed. The 1,000+ international student presence (from 50+ countries) creates a normalised, inclusive environment. Standard urban precautions apply (stay aware late at night, use reputable transport), but no exceptional safety concerns have been reported. SMK provides comprehensive international student support including a structured first-week induction programme, assigned academic counsellors for each student, a Psychological Counselling Service, and the 'Hey Ready' career centre for employment connections. TRP and immigration guidance is provided upon admission — SMK issues the mediation number required to book VFS Global appointments for Indian students, and provides enrolled students with TRP renewal guidance annually. SMK's Moodle LMS, e-library, and Classter digital management platform support academic progress throughout the programme. Students Traffic provides end-to-end support: eligibility and scholarship assessment (40% talent scholarship eligibility check), motivation interview coaching with SMK-specific mock sessions, complete application management through apply.smk.lt, campus city selection guidance (Vilnius vs Kaunas vs Klaipeda), MIGRIS registration and VFS Global appointment coordination, accommodation search assistance for all three cities, pre-departure briefing (winter clothing list, arrival checklist, Indian community contacts), and annual TRP renewal reminders.
